When an individual -whether they be a scientist, journalist, former trainer or other- speaks out about their experiences working with captive marine mammals, when they give their professional opinion on the welfare of captive marine mammals (based either on direct or indirect observation) or when evidence is gathered and released to the general public or to a court of law to suggest another side to the captive marine mammal display industry, lawsuits tend to get slapped around. The latest (but not the first and we are sure she won't be the last) to experience this is journalist Elizabeth Batt. We have shared many of Elizabeth's articles over the years and whether you do or don't agree with the idea that marine mammals should not be in captivity, the articles are always well-written and informative. And so is her latest article, which documents just one of the many stories about how, when it comes to the captive marine mammal display industry, fear is used to prevent freedom of (even well-researched) speech.
